Author Thoughts - Book - Reunion
I wrote Reunion on a whim to see how a Law Keeper would handle emotions and past ties, especially when those past ties are presented in the form of an ex-lover. Writing Reunion gave me a better insight into the thoughts and feelings of a Law Keeper, and helped me to imagine what daily life is like for one—having to work closely to members of the other bloodlines while maintaining a sense of separation from their own. It also helped me flesh out the other Law Keepers that we haven’t really met yet.
As for the characters in this story, I really enjoyed writing them. Marise is the main focus of the story and that really shows. It’s her love for Jascha and the secrets of her past that I wanted to write about, and how she comes to face up to what she’d done and accept responsibility, as well as accepting her feelings for Jascha and realising that she can be a Law Keeper and be a lover at the same time. Jascha was an interesting character for me to write. He’s alpha, but has hints of beta about him too. Because this story heavily featured Jascha’s older brother Tynan too, it made me think about that character and now I want to find Tynan a love of his own! » read more about this story
Author Thoughts - Character - Marise
Marise is the first Law Keeper that I’ve written and explored closely. In the Prophecy Trilogy, we encountered the Law Keepers from a distance, but it isn’t until Reunion that we see them in their own environment and take a trip into the head of one. Marise is complex and uses her position as a Law Keeper to restrain her emotions and distance herself from the pain of her past. It’s the perfect excuse for her cold demeanour. I enjoyed writing Marise because I love to explore the way people erect barriers around themselves. She uses her uniform as a shield against her emotions and pain, and as a barrier against her love for Jascha. It’s fun to write someone who has emotional distance at the beginning and then gradually accepts that there is room for duty and love in their life. Marise’s pain is two-fold as she blames herself for the things that happened in the past but can’t find the strength to admit her wrong to herself or anyone else. Writing Marise was a little like watching a flower bloom again. She gradually opened up to reveal her true self. » read more about this character
Author Thoughts - Character - Jascha
I found it difficult to write Jascha because I always find it hard to pain one of my characters. Jascha starts the story Reunion battered and on the verge of death. He’s saved by Marise, the Law Keeper who has come to investigate the attack on her lord and is also Jascha’s ex-lover. In terms of his character, I found Jascha’s determination to be enthralling. He refuses to give up on Marise, regardless of how she tries to push him away. He’s so in love with her, even though they’ve been apart for half a century. It’s beautiful to write that kind of love and believe for a moment that it exists. He’s a strong character and an accepting one. He knows when to push and when to find another method of persuasion. I really loved getting inside his head and telling this part of his life. » read more about this character
Author Thoughts - Character - Tynan
Jascha’s older brother Tynan needs a woman. When I finished writing Reunion, I realised that I can’t leave poor Tynan in a world without love. He’s so charming and caring, but rough and handsome at the same time. He’d make some young vampire a wonderful mate. There was something about him that captivated me. Perhaps it was because he only had a side role in this story and was the bridge between Jascha and Marise, helping to rebuild their relationship and watching over both of them on behalf of the other. Strong, stoic and accepting of his fate, Tynan has become an important member of the Venia guard along with his brother. I think he’s wonderful and I’ve simply got to write him a story of his own. » read more about this character
